"Rare Book By Carl Maria Seyppel, "christoph Columbus Logbuch" Circa 1884"
"Christoph Columbus Logbuch", or Christopher Columbus Logbook, published by Felix Bagel, Düsseldorf, around 1884. Rare and very atypical, this exceptional work is due to Carl (or Karl) Maria Seyppel, (1847 - 1913), of Dusseldorf. Painter, designer and writer, he produced very curious, satirical and innovative works in the 1880s and 1890s, going so far as to "make up" the exterior appearance of these productions. Thus, this pseudo logbook of Christopher Columbus seems straight out of a chest having stayed at the bottom of the oceans since 1492...: covers accumulating sand, algae and shells, pages falsely greened with micro algae and irregularly cut, even seeming having been torn on the margins... This work was thought and designed to resemble a vestige of underwater excavations. The account of Columbus' wanderings, in German, is of course satirical, bordering on the absurd, and peppered with eccentric engravings. First edition, circa 1884, 39 pages, in good condition. Height x width = 30.7 cm x 21 cm; thickness = 2.8 cm; weight = 670 grams Free shipping to mainland France.
