Gaston LEROUX 1854 / 1942
Gaston Leroux, also known as Gaston Veunevot-Leroux or Veuvenot-Leroux, pseudonyms of Gaston Veunevot, born September 14, 1854 in Paris and died May 25, 1942 in Bordeaux, is a sculptor and French medalist. Gaston Veunevot was born on September 14, 1854 in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris. He is declared of unknown father and son of Julia Veunevot, milliner, aged 21, originally from Proussy (Calvados). Shortly after his birth, his mother met a certain Hirschfeld, a member of the French diplomatic corps, and moved with him to Vienna in Austria. Gaston Veunevot was raised by his maternal grandparents, Parisians by adoption, restaurateur on rue des Bons-Enfants.
Out of gratitude to his maternal grandmother, Louise, née Leroux, he adopted her name as a pseudonym. In 1866, he joined his mother in Vienna to continue his studies. In 1874, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna where he received training as a sculptor from the director of the academy, Carl Kundmann, until 1877. He received teaching from Gustave Deloye, during his stay in Vienna. Freed from his military obligations, Gaston Leroux was admitted in August 1881 to the sculpture section of the Paris School of Fine Arts where he was a student of François Jouffroy. He has participated in the Salon des Artistes Français, member of this society since 1883. He obtained mentions in 1882, 1883. Third class medal in 1885, also a travel grant. Bronze medal in 1889 at the Universal Exhibition; second class in 1900, bronze medal in 1900. He was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1908; He taught from 1893, as professor of statuary at the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts. At the same date, he was the official statuary of the City of Bordeaux, and as such carried out numerous commissions including the Monument to the Marquis de Tourny (1900) on the square of the same name, the tombs of the cardinals at the Saint-Cathedral. Source Bénézit and Dictionary of Sculptors – 19th century bronze - Pierre Kjelberg – Editions de l'amateur Founder: signature Pinedo Bronzier Paris Art bronze and furniture company whose management was first ensured by the father around 1850, then by the son, who was also a sculptor in 1865 under the name “Émile Pinèdo fils”. This house originally installed at 25 rue de Bretagne, had several addresses in Paris (25 rue de Bretagne before 1850; in 1855, L. Pinèdo was installed at 110 rue Saint-Louis in Marais; he succeeded his father in 1865; in 1905, the foundry was established at 137 rue Vieille du Temple in the Marais district, then 18 du Boulevard du Prince Eugène and 49 Rue de Bondy. The production of the foundry, which is enjoying great sales success, is concentrated around furnishing objects as well as statuettes and busts, including the very numerous ones of Napoleon I according to the sculptor Meissonnier. Among the Pinèdo's client sculptors include Leroux (Aïda), Iolin, Debut (The Water Carrier), Meissonnier and Van der Straeten.
