"Magnificent Abstract Painting Of The City Of Duclair Oil On Canvas Signed Michel Patrix"
Michel Patrix was a French figurative painter and engraver, born May 25, 1917 in Cabourg (Calvados) and died May 4, 1973. He was part of the second School of Paris, an artistic movement which developed after the Second War world and which brought together artists of diverse origins. Michel Patrix spent his youth in different regions of France. He attended the Collège des Doctrinaires in Brive-la-Gaillarde, where he undoubtedly received a solid general education. Later, he settled in Moissac, where he stayed at Saint-Pierre Abbey. Michel Patrix's family was passionate about the arts and music, but they did not support his artistic career. His father was an engineer, inventor and manufacturer of carpentry machine tools. Although his parents were interested in the arts, they did not encourage him to pursue a career in this field. He arrived in Paris in 1941 and attended the workshop of André Lhote, then that of Othon Friesz when he joined the Groupe de l'école founded in 1942, so called for its members' habit of climbing on a ladder to observe the roofs of Paris. He brought together with him, in a small workshop made available to them on the second floor of the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière, the painters Geneviève Asse, Jacques Busse, Jean-Marie Calmettes, Ernest-René Collot, Jean Cortot, Daniel Dalmbert and Christiane Laran, as well as the sculptor Jacques Dufresne4. If we observe the presence of the members of the group at the Salon des under thirty in November 1943 - Pierre du Colombier remarked "Michel Patrix, fine colorist who dares to tackle a human subject"5 -, Éric Mercier is not missing not to “underline the importance of the Ladder Group between 1945 and 1950: it then constitutes one of the rare and perhaps the only figurative group spontaneously constituted without any external interference, such as that of merchants or critics . He outlines the first figurative aesthetic resulting from both the great elders of the beginning of the century and the war years”6.
