Laundress

Watercolor on paper depicting a washerwoman leaving to wash laundry in a large basket carried on her head, her son or younger brother standing at her side. The watercolor is not signed but this type of character is often used to animate the landscapes of Joseph Vernet, Hubert Robert and their many followers. The watercolor is framed in a Louis XVI style molded and gilded wooden frame and measures 23x17.5 cm. She is slightly sunstroked.
