Scagliola, from the Italian Scaglia, which means "scale", also called "marble stucco", which is an inlay technique imitating marble and hard stones, based on selenite and pigments. This technique, which was created at the beginning of the Seicento in Italy, became fashionable because it was an effective substitute for pietra dura marquetry, very popular in Florence, but much more expensive.
