(Charles) Théodore Frère was an important, early French Orientalist painter whose curious eye scanned the Arabic countries: the people, their lands, their cultures. He had a special relationship with Egypt, where he had even started a studio in Cairo.
He painted at least five times the magnificent island of Philae in S. Egypt. Frère was a popular participant of the official Salons in Paris.
