"Robert Dessales-quentin (1885-1958) "le Vieux Ajat" In Périgord Noir, Watercolor"
This very beautiful watercolor represents the village of Ajat in Périgord Noir, with in the background the Saint Martin church with its bell tower – wall with 4 openings which dates from the 12th and 13th century and part of the castle which was a former Templar commandery; it is signed Robert Dessales-Quentin (1885-1958) at the bottom left. A label “exhibition of watercolors by Robert Dessales Quentin” is affixed to the back, an exhibition that the artist organized each year to present his works to his numerous clients and friends Born in Brantôme in 1885, Robert Dessales-Quentin became deaf at the age of 4; He studied at the National Institute of the Deaf and Mute in Paris. Subsequently, moving towards a career as an artist, he entered the Julian Academy in the workshop of JP Laurens. Returning to Périgord, he became a renowned watercolorist and produced numerous works on Périgord, whether landscapes, but also views of castles, beautiful residences or churches which make the Dordogne heritage famous. He became a member of the French artists' salon in 1920. In Périgord, in Limousin, throughout the southwest, he painted luminous and transparent landscapes in watercolor. He exhibited in Paris, Bordeaux, Arras, Roubaix, Nancy etc… Very beautiful watercolor with the reflections of the houses and the church in a body of water located at the bottom of the village.
