Object description :

"Painting Of The Virgin Of The Apocalypse - 17th Century"
A beautiful work of art from this 17th century Flemish school. An almost poetic expression which deals with the theme of the Virgin of the Apocalypse, in a setting rich in biblical symbolism. The virgin in mandorla, between heaven and earth, between Sun and Moon and through the gate of Heaven, is awaited by a large bellicose dragon with seven heads each wearing a diadem.

This representation refers to the texts of the Apocalypse of Saint John: “The sanctuary of God, which is in heaven, was opened, and the ark of his Covenant appeared in the Sanctuary. A great sign appeared in the sky: a Woman, having the sun for her cloak, the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars…. Another sign appeared in the sky: a large Dragon, fiery red, with seven heads and ten horns, and, on each of the seven heads, a diadem. Its tail, dragging a third of the stars in the sky, threw them to the earth. The Dragon came to stand before the Woman who was about to give birth, in order to devour the child as soon as it was born. Now she gave birth to a son, a male child, who will be the shepherd of all nations, leading them with a scepter of iron. The child was taken up to God and His Throne, and the Woman fled into the desert, where God prepared a place for her. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven proclaiming: “Now this is the salvation, the power, and the kingdom of our God, this is the power of his Christ!”
