French school from the beginning of the 19th century, Homer and the daughter of the shepherd Glaucus after the work of François Gérard, Baron Gérard. The scene presents the moment when Homer is abandoned on the island of Chios by a ship and taken in by the shepherd Glaucus and his daughter Euplocamia, who prevents the blind poet from falling into the sea. Originally, this painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1814 as a counterpart to "Bélisaire" produced in 1797, the original painting was finally destroyed by Gérard, who was not satisfied with it. The subject is known to us by the reprint in engraving by Raphaël Massard in 1816 and by some rare oil on canvas copies, such as our painting, the work of a follower of Gérard. Empire style, Restoration period, circa 1814-1820. Typical of the Empire period, our painting is presented in its beautiful frame with palmettes from the Restoration period, in wood gilded with gold leaf, a beautiful model with palmettes. Our painting is a large format, a rare souvenir of a painting that has now disappeared. Very good condition, painting and frame cleaned Frame dimensions: 86 x 105.3cm Canvas dimensions: 71 x 91cm
