Jean Raymond Hippolyte Lazerges born in Narbonne on July 5, 1817 and died in Mustapha on October 24, 1887 is a French orientalist painter and composer. Son of a baker from Narbonne who refused for a long time, despite a marked vocation to allow him to develop his artistic skills, Hippolyte Lazerges spent part of his childhood in Algeria. He ended up returning to mainland Paris in 1838 for his military service, including he was finally reformed, and studied fine arts there with David d'Angers who led him to carry out state commissions and mural paintings for religious buildings. His painting of The Death of the Virgin is kept in the Tuileries chapel. Definitively returning to Algeria in 1861 due to health problems, he practiced the orientalist genre very early on, particularly through portraits. With Joseph Sintès and Alfred Chataud, he was one of the founders of the 19th century Algiers Orientalist School, characterized by a realistic and intimate representation of the Moorish people and landscapes. His Algerian café scenes bear witness to this. From 1863 to 1868, he created murals illustrating episodes from the life of Mary, adorning nine of the thirteen chapels of the Notre-Dame-de-Recouvrance church in Orléans. From 1865 to 1869, he decorated the Saint-Laurent church in Orléans, whose walls and the base of the side chapels and the choir are decorated with paintings. Armand Point is his student. He was named Knight of the Legion of Honor on June 29, 1867, during the Universal Exhibition of 1867.
His works are partly preserved at the Narbonne Museum of Art and History, in the graphic arts department of the museum. of the Louvre, at the Musée du Quai Branly, at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and in various international public collections. In addition to painting, Hippolyte Lazerges wrote a few essays, including The Form and the Ideal in Art (1882). He is also known as the composer of a large number of vocal melodies, several of which, such as Vive Paris and Return to France, have become popular.
