Jan van Leyden was an interesting Dutch marine painter from Rotterdam during the second half of the 17th century.
Our painting represents a Dutch and a Swedish ship near Kronborg Castle. William Shakespeare, circa 1600, actually situated his famous play Hamlet in this fortress.
In 1658 this Danish Castle was conquered by the Swedes, two years later this strategically very important citadel was taken back by the Danes. Sadly our painting (which is fully signed) is not dated, so I can not say at which precise point in its interesting history it was painted.
