Object description :

"Oak Panel In Polychrome Bas Relief Of The Assumption Of The Virgin. Germany Early 16th Century"
Beautiful and rare oak panel carved in polychrome low relief. It is curved at the top and framed by a large molding. It represents the Virgin in the center. Under the representation of God the father at the top, it is inscribed in a long string: “Totapulchra es amica mea et macula originalisnon es in te” (you are all beautiful, my beloved, and there is no stain in you) taken from a verse from the Song of Solomon. It is surrounded by decorative elements also highlighted by their speech bubbles. Here, “the artist has chosen to represent figurations accessible to ordinary mortals although symbolic: Star which announces the sun, star of the fimament, unshakable tower, immarcescible flower, immaculate lily, earth with imperishable cedar, branch with indestructible bud, olive tree with magnificent fruits on which believers feed, ramparts of virgins, enclosed garden of life, indestructible wall, fountain of life, well of goodness, port of souls in pain, mirror of justice "Extracts from the study of this panel made by Madame Elisabeth Poytou, historian"
