By Ferdinand Barbedienne, Magnificent Large Inkwell Pen Holder in Gilt Copper bronze of antique inspiration on rectangular tray with curved border resting on four claw feet. In the center, on a beautiful pedestal with the heads of Bacchus, it bears a superb bust of Lucius Verus Roman Emperor and with two round inkwell cups richly decorated with gadroons and vine leaves and flowered buds, with various and rich moldings, interior in Cobalt blue crystal from Baccarat (labels missing), with hinged lid. At the back two small Antique Lamps serve as pen rests at the time (or now pens depending on use). Signature engraved on the rear edge of the bust: F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR, plus stamp A. Collas. Period 19th Century, signature on the Bardedienne plateau. Large Dimensions L 40 cm H 25 cm D 17 cm Parisian Private Collection. Of very fine finesse and execution and great workmanship by one of the Best Founders of the 19th century. Very good condition, Complete original, Beautiful original patina Old Copper Gold with Matte and shiny. Lucuis Verus: Adoptive brother and co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus (130-169), Reference Work: Rome, circa 180 – 183 AD, Portrait of the Emperor Lucius Verus, marble, H.100 cm, former Camille Borghèse collection, Paris, Musée du Louvre, Inv. no. MR 550. Discovered near Rome at Acqua Traversa in 1674, the marble bust of the emperor Lucius Verus is the only one to have been made during his reign, enlarged to constitute a posthumous effigy, where the sensitivity of the Antonine style becomes a baroque abundance. Acquired by Camille Borghèse, the work entered the Louvre Museum in 1807.
