The doors and the perimeter are enhanced with a relief decoration of arhats and dragons, the base decorated with lotus leaves and scrolls. Japan, Meiji period 1868 and 1912. A butsudan is a religious shrine in the temples and homes of Japanese Buddhists and others. It is a cabinet with doors that surround and protect a religious icon, most often a statue or mandala.
