It is always very frustrating not to be able to identify the author of a painting, especially, as is the case here, when the work is of very high quality. The rendering, of great sensitivity, of the light and the play of shadows, the very precise craftsmanship of the architectures and the vegetation, and the general atmosphere are however quite characteristic of Nordic painters, and we are thinking particularly of an artist German or especially Danish. The two figures, and in particular the young man in the Nordic cap resting against the fountain, are executed with marked attention to detail.
Posted in a small square in the historic district of San Polo, the artist represents the back of the Saint Roch church, with its campanile, its apse, as well as two statues adorning the top of the facade. The other campanile is that of the Frari church; it seems to be one with the Saint Roch church although it is located a few tens of meters further.
