Manuel Ruiz Guerrero (Granada, 1864 – Madrid, 1917) was a Spanish painter and illustrator.
Ruiz Guerrero studied at the "Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias" ("Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Our Lady of Sorrows"), in Granada, with Eduardo García Guerra. In 1881, he obtained a scholarship from the Provincial Deputation of Granada to study in Rome. The grant was renewed in 1884 and the conditions included the return of the works of art to the council. In December 1884, an earthquake occurred in Granada and Ruiz Guerrero, with other painters, created a society of watercolorists. They exhibited their works to collect donations for the victims. The initiative gave way to the “Centro Artístico, Literario y Científico” (“Center of Arts, Literature and Sciences”) in April of the following year. Andalusia In 1889 he participated in the exhibition organized by the "Agrupación Española de Acuarelistas" ("Spanish Society of Watercolorists") in Madrid. In 1892, he won the second medal at the “National Exhibition of Fine Arts” with “La sopa” (“The soup”). In 1896 he traveled through the province of Granada. The paintings from his tour were exhibited at the Corpus Christi Exhibition, [e] organized by the “Artistic, Literary and Scientific Center of Granada”. In 1898, he presented “Mala tarde” (“Bad afternoon”) and “Una juerga” (“A party”) at the VI Biennale of the “Círculo de Bellas Artes”, in Madrid. In 1899, he contributed to “La vida literaria”, a magazine directed by Jacinto Benavente which only appeared between January and August of the same year. He was also a member of the jury of the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. 20th century During the winter of 1900, he traveled to Biscay, perhaps attracted by the works of Paul Gauguin, Ignacio Zuloaga and Pablo Picasso, presented at the first "Modern Art Exhibition" in Bilbao. [f] During the summer, he moved to Malaga to work on commissions for Paris, Bilbao and Madrid. He was an art professor at the "Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Telmo de Malaga" ("Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Telmo de Malaga"), founded in 1849. His choice of subject during the early years was is focused on the much-demanded depiction of peasants and historical themes. Around 1890, he moved towards more realistic genre scenes from his native Andalusia. His paintings release great technical resources. He died in Madrid in 1917. His paintings are scattered in private collections and museums, mainly in Andalusia. The Bibataubín Palace, in Granada, houses a significant number.
