Bonaparte crossing the Great-Saint-Bernard is an equestrian portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte then First Consul, produced by Jacques-Louis David between 1800 and 1803. Napoleon is represented during the crossing of the Alpine pass of the Great Saint-Bernard by the army of reserve, an episode which marks the start of the second Italian campaign. David painted five versions of this portrait, the first of which was commissioned by the King of Spain Charles IV as a testimony of understanding between his kingdom and the French Republic; Since 1949 it has been kept at the national museum of the Château de Malmaison. The next three were commissioned by the First Consul for propaganda purposes and were the first official portraits of Napoleon. They adorn the Château de Saint-Cloud (since 1816 at the Charlottenbourg Palace in Berlin), the library of the Hôtel des Invalides (since 1837 at the National Museum of the Château de Versailles), and the palace of the Cisalpine Republic in Milan (since 1834 at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna). The last version had no sponsor and was kept by David until his death (entered the national museum of the Palace of Versailles in 1979, it has been exhibited at the Louvre Abu Dhabi since 2017). Archetype of the propaganda portrait, the work has been reproduced numerous times in engraving, on vases or plates, in the form of a puzzle or on postage stamps, testimonies of an important posterity. This portrait influenced artists like Antoine-Jean Gros and Théodore Géricault. The five versions of the painting are large and of similar dimensions (approximately 2.6 × 2.2 meters). Bonaparte is represented wearing the uniform of a general-in-chief, wearing a gold-laced cocked hat, armed with a Mamluk-style saber and draped in a mantle blown up by the wind which rushes through its folds. He rides a horse, and with his gloved left hand grips the bridle which controls his rearing mount. While turning towards the viewer, he indicates a direction with the right hand which is not wearing a glove. In the background, soldiers climb the mountainside and bring in cannons. At the bottom right, we see the tricolor flag flying. In the foreground, the names of BONAPARTE, ANNIBAL and KAROLVS MAGNVSIMP. are engraved on rocks.
