Illumination On Engraving , Circa 1600, Image Of Piety

Cut from a 16th century German New Testament, a marvelous copper engraving on fine paper has been preciously illuminated, enhanced with gold, to serve as a pious image in a missal…. Allowing the spirit to soar during the long religious services of the time. It is the gospel according to St Luke, we see the writer at bottom left with the bull, the rest reads like a comic strip, populated with numerous places and landscapes, intimate scenes, with the annunciation, the nativity, various miracles , scenes of peace and violence, which have become an abundant miniature with beautiful colors, populated by around forty characters and animals. It is quite probably a fine work of monastic illumination, circa 1600.
