BARRES (Mauritius) - A free man. Paris, Imprimerie Nationale, 1988; in-8, 375 pp., paperback, filled covers. Maurice Barrès was born in 1862 in Charmes (Vosges) and died on December 4, 1923 in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Seine), is a French writer and politician, leading figure of French nationalism. The first axis of his thought is “the cult of the Self”. He affirms that our first duty is to defend our self against the “Barbarians”, that is to say against everything which risks weakening it in the development of its own sensitivity. The second axis is summarized by the expression "the earth and the dead" which testify to the evolution of Maurice Barrès towards republican nationalism and traditionalism, the attachment to the roots, to the family, to the army and to the homeland. He remained one of the leading thinkers of the nationalist right during the interwar period. One of the volumes in the “Cult of the Self” series. Numbered copy on Rives paper.
