"Antique Carpet From The Mahal Sultanabad Collection Circa 1880. 432x312 Cm"

Sultanabad Antique Carpets The city of Sultanabad (now known as Arak) was founded in the early 1800s as a center of commercial carpet production in Iran.
At the end of the 19th century, the firm of Hotz and Son and Ziegler and Co. established a manufactory in Arak / Sultanabad whose sole purpose was to produce carpets to meet Western demands. They even brought in western designers to conform to western tastes at the time.
This was the first example of practical Western influence in the industry (which until now had been immune to Western ideas).
Many Sultanabad Persian rugs woven by Ziegler and Co. featured more up-to-date colors as well as larger-scale patterns that some in the art-historical world attribute to the early formation of the Arts and Crafts movement.

The term "Sultanabad rugs" as opposed to "Mahal rugs" is primarily a term used to refer to the "best" rugs that have been woven in Arak.

While Sarouk Farahan and Sultanabad rugs were woven in the same general geographical area, the two are quite different. Although Sultanabad rugs share part of the Persian design repertoire, they tend to have a looser, looser weave (and therefore feature a bolder, larger-scale design).

The design of Sultanabads tends to be more closely associated with those of Heriz or Serapi. That said, Sultanabads linework is more linear and classic while maintaining a more laid back, tribal feel. Sultanbad rugs will often have warmer color palettes which also tend to resemble those of early Persian Sarouk Farahan rugs.

Sultanabad rugs are extremely sought after in the modern market. The popularity of Sultanabad carpets dates back to the middle of the 19th century. These carpets were designed and produced mainly for export to European consumers, as was the case with the firm Ziegler.

Sultanabad designers have modified the more traditional Persian color palettes. Although rooted in history, these weavers reinvented ancient Persian designs and adapted them to more Western tastes.

Although Sultanabad rugs were not always considered purely Persian, they have become classics in their own right.
Carpets inspired by Sultanabad designs are still made for Western consumers today. Antique pieces from the region fetch top prices at auction.

Sultanabad rugs feature a diverse selection of colors that defy classification. Traditional color palettes found on Sultanabad rugs can include subtle neutrals, vibrant reds and light blues that create a regal western appearance. Unique color combinations, such as tourmaline pink paired with oxidized green, are also found on Sultanabad rugs, underscoring their tendency to reinvent the traditional.

The varied style of Persian Sultanabad rugs gives buyers the option of choosing between light and airy neutral tones or richly colored rugs that have a dark, grounded feel. In the modern home environment, Sultanabad antique rugs have the ability to unite the old with the new.
