Gold solidus of Emperor Marcianus (Marcian) Struck in Constantinople between 450 and 457. Condition VF / SUP 4.44g Obverse: DN MARCIA-NVS PF AVG. Diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Marcien facing, holding in the right hand the spear which rests on the shoulder and in the left, a shield decorated with a horseman charging on the right; beaded tiara. Reverse: VICTORI-A AVGGGB/ -|*// CONOB. Victoria draped, standing left, holding long beaded cross in right hand; an eight-pointed star in the field to the right. Marcian was born in Thrace in 392. On the death of Theodosius on July 28, 450, he was chosen by Pulcheria, whom he married. He fights effectively against the Huns and refuses to pay them tribute. He convenes the Council of Chalcedon. After a peaceful reign of six years, he died in January 457.
