The sacred scene immortalised in this pleasant work is articulated on the canonical compositional layout that unites the Madonna, in the centre, with the Child Jesus and the little Saint John the Baptist at her side.

In this particular case, St. John is portrayed on the left with his tenderly devout gaze turned towards the infant Saviour and his arms crossed folded across his chest.

The baby Jesus is holding a goldfinch in his hands, as Christian belief has it that the red stain on the head of the little bird appeared during the ascent to Mount Calvary, when the graceful bird removed a sting from the Saviour's crown of thorns to relieve his suffering and stained its feathers with blood.

The work, whose style fits perfectly into 17th century French culture, suggests the pertinent attribution to the Baroque painter Pierre Mignard (Troyes, 1612 - Paris, 1695), whose works were highly praised and earned him a great reputation as a portrait painter as well as a painter of historical-religious subjects.

His first artistic training took place in Simon Voet's studio; he then moved to Italy for over twenty years (1635-1656), finally returning to Paris as court painter, bringing with him the Bolognese style and the influence of Roman classicism.

Such echoes can also be traced in our painting, which is mindful of the 17th-century Italian lesson, perceptible in the elegant compositional balance and chromatic and luministic sensitivity, dictated by the classical models of Guido Reni, and especially Sassoferrato.

The elegant fluency of touch and sensual refinement typical of Mignard, combined with a very accurate chiaroscuro rendering, inherited from his artistic training in Rome, and the exceptional sweetness of the drawing, the floridity of the complexion and the almost enamelled surfaces, further support our attribution.

Finally, we can admire the organisational structure of the three subjects which, thanks to the embrace of the Virgin, form a pyramid structure, of Leonardesque memory, a scheme that would have great fortune in later years, to give depth to the scene, expressing great dynamism in the succession of gazes and diagonal gestures between the three characters.
