"A Pair Of Candelabra"

Royal Antique is delighted to present this impressive pair of 19th-century candelabra, epitomizing the transitional elegance and refined classicism of the French Charles X and early Louis Philippe periods. These monumental pieces combine robust design with luxurious materials, making them a distinguished addition to any grand interior.

Design and Materials:

  • Classical Columnar Form: Each candelabrum features a towering, fluted central column of finely patinated dark bronze, evoking the architectural purity of antiquity. The deep, rich tone of the bronze provides a striking contrast to the radiant gilt elements.

  • Luxurious Malachite Base: The column rises from a substantial square plinth of vibrant malachite. This highly prized semi-precious stone, with its unique and intricate natural green banding, lends an air of exoticism and opulence to the piece. The malachite plinth is set within a finely molded gilt bronze base, adorned with elaborate scrolling acanthus leaves and classical motifs, all resting on sturdy gilt bronze feet.

  • Radiant Gilt Bronze Embellishments: The dark bronze column is beautifully articulated by a large, ornate gilt bronze section at its base, featuring richly chased acanthus leaves and stylized classical motifs. The upper section of the candelabrum, supporting the lights, is also rendered in brilliant gilt bronze.

  • Multi-Arm Lighting: Each candelabrum features five gracefully curving arms, richly adorned with classical foliage, supporting five intricately detailed gilt bronze candle nozzles and drip-pans. A central upright also culminates in a matching gilt bronze candle holder, bringing the total capacity to six lights per candelabrum. The design ensures a magnificent display of illumination.

Period Significance and Craftsmanship:

Dating from the early to mid-19th century (circa 1820-1840), these candelabra perfectly capture the aesthetic sensibilities of the Charles X and early Louis Philippe reigns. This period saw a continuation of neoclassical forms, often enriched with romanticized natural motifs and a renewed emphasis on opulent materials. The masterful execution of the bronze casting, the meticulous patination, the exquisite mercury gilding, and the precise integration of the malachite veneers attest to the superlative skill of the Parisian bronziers of the era. These candelabra would have originally adorned the most prestigious salons, dining rooms, or grand halls, reflecting the elevated taste of their owners.
