Antwerp, 1695-96, Louis XIV Censer, Sterling Silver, Master At The Harp
Large Louis XIV period censer in sterling silver with the hallmarks of the city of Antwerp for the year 1695-1696 and the hallmark of a master goldsmith marking a harp whose works are listed from 1690 to 1737.
Of a great simplicity typical for this period, it is nevertheless very heavy for its size which probably explains its rather exceptional condition given its great age. Another very rare detail: it still has its original chains with welded links. Each link is welded separately which represented a considerable work.
The three putti heads are similar but not identical. In addition to the hallmarks of the seventeenth century, it is struck with recency hallmarks from several consecutive periods. It weighs more than a kilo.(1010 grams)
