In 1946, Jean Chevolleau left his Vendée for Paris. He entered the National School of Fine Arts in the Souverbie studio. At the same time, he took courses at the Ateliers Jaudon and Lemagny for engraving and attended Othon Friesz's studio at the Grande Chaumière. 1960 to devote himself solely to painting. His meeting in the early 1950s with the art lover and patron Camille Renault (known as Big Boy) was decisive. It allows him to regularly exhibit his work in his very popular restaurant in Puteaux. It was there that one of the masters of Post-Cubism, Jacques Villon, noticed him, who invited him to his studio frequented by already recognized artists: La Fresnaye, Kupka, Léger, Estève, Picabia, Pignon, André Lhote, Manessier.. This collective of artists called “Groupe de Puteaux” (a movement based on the rediscovery of Fauvism and Cubism with the aim of synthesizing them) marked him for life. The 1960s were truly a turning point. Jean Chevolleau frees himself from drawing, his palette is enriched with pastel tones. The subjects are diluted, abstracted, vanish. At the same time appears this acute sense of composition, the solid architecture which characterizes so well the works of the ports of La Rochelle or Péniscola in Spain. Blue will always be the color of choice for this man in love with the sky and the sea. His blues, of a rare intensity, he declines them to infinity. But Jean Chevolleau's tonic palette also includes a range of great richness made up of green, gray, yellow, red, pastel ochre, tawny notes... In 1975, after 30 years spent in his Paris studio, he returned to Fontenay-le-Comte where he spent most of his time. Inspired by his native land, he paints tirelessly. His work is enriched, asserts itself even more. He died in 1996.
