Saint Catherine of Alexandria, 17th Century Workshop of GUIDO RENI (1575-1642) Large 17th Century Italian Old Master depiction of the Virgin Martyr Saint Catherine of Alexandria, oil on canvas. Excellent quality and condition around 1620 depiction of Catherine of Alexandria looking up to the sky before her martyrdom. Wearing her crown as a princess of Alexandria, Egypt, she was executed by sword by order of the Roman Emperor Maxentius in c. 305. The work dates from Reni's active period and is a larger version of the work held in the National Trust Collection which also contains several variants indicating that it is a commission from the workshop/studio by Reni around 1620.
