Large torches with double patina and foliage decoration
Cast bronze, chased, gilded or varnished
11 elements and a stem with thread
Paris, circa 1830
Dimensions
H. 28; Diameter. 12cm
This pair of torches rests on a circular terrace with a rich, finely chased decoration of foliate scrolls. The central part of the shaft is fluted, the gilded elements being composed of large palmettes, rows of pearls and braided friezes; the cup-shaped socket, also decorated with palmettes, rests on a gadrooned pedestal, the same gadroons as on the bobèches. One of the terraces is monogrammed "DT".
These bronze models testify to the level of quality achieved by bronze craftsmen under the Restoration. These large candlesticks are made up of eleven elements held together by a threaded rod. Each piece was cast separately, re-paring, chasing, gilding or varnishing. It is also worth noting the fine quality of the gilding, thanks to both the matting and the burnishing, which makes these torches fine quality pieces under Charles X. The double patina, which can be brown, greenish or simply varnished bronze, was particularly fashionable during the Restoration. A similar model can be found in the Mobilier National under the number GML-6095 for the upper part. This comparison shows how bronze parts can be interchanged to create models that are as close as possible to the customer's wishes.
Condition report:
Excellent condition, some wear from use. The pair of torches also has its original threaded rods. Very good condition of its original gilding done with mercury amalgam. Minor oxidation on the varnished parts.
