Very rare grocer's or apothecary's sugar ax from the 18th century.
In wrought iron and walnut
This two-bladed ax was used to cut sugar loaves (sugar cubes only appeared in the 19th century).
3 hot marks "VJ" (the toolmaker or the carpenter?) under the box and on the sugar outlet chute.
The banks too marked by time have been redone identically.
