Madonna and Child with John the Baptist overhanging the dragon, wood, 19th century
This statuette is made of two parts put together, held by a dowel.
The upper part represents the Holy Virgin seated, coiffed on a medieval fashion with her veil making two flaps knotted on each side of the face. The rest of the veil falls rearward, decorated with an edge ornamented with curls. She wears a long tunic whose neckline is adorned in mediaval clothes fashion, and the whole clothing is shaped in many moving pleats. The Virgin holds on her knees the Christ child that she keeps with her right hand, and she rests her left hand on the shoulder of Saint John the Baptist, standing up beside them.
The lower part is a semi-circular stepped console. The devil depicted as a winged dragon grasps on it contorting himself: his clawed paws and his wings surround the pedestal and the head points to the bottom, with the mouth open.
Very good condition, sound wood.A crack on the back of the console, and tips ends of a wing and of the tail are missing (see pictures). Hanging device on the back.
