Born in Greece to a French family, he studied sculpture under the direction of Antoine Bourdelle and painting under Bernard Naudin at the Beaux-Arts in Paris.
He began exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants in 1920, followed by the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries.
At the same time, he designed furniture and posters.
In 1933, he was known for burning several hundred of his paintings in order to renew his art.
From 1935 onwards, his reputation spread worldwide, and he exhibited on every continent.
Some critics saw him as a major painter, and his works can be found in numerous museums.
Jean de Botton is unclassifiable: surrealist, cubist... He explored all currents, creating his own style.
