Object description :

"Consulate - Empire Return From Egypt Mahogany Sofa - Attributed To Demay - Ca 1800"
Large sofa sofa in mahogany and mahogany veneer, shepherdess model with upholstered sides, upturned backrest, lion's paw feet and armrest supports in the bust of a woman in the antique style wearing an Egyptian Nemes, front saber feet in the Etruscan. Parisian manufacture from the end of the Directoire period or the beginning of the Consulate, end of the 18th century or 1800. This type of production is typical of what is called the Return from Egypt style, very fashionable at the turn of the century. 18th century and 19th century. The seat in its manufacture is still completely in the tradition of the 18th century but it prefigures what will become of the Empire style at the beginning of the 19th century. Beautiful model with elegant proportions, fine and nervous sculpture, perfect finishes. If our armchair does not bear a stamp to precisely identify its author, it is certainly the work of a good Parisian seat manufacturer. Everything in this armchair is of excellent quality (use of solid mahogany on a major part of the seat). We will particularly note the fine execution of the mahogany sculpture such as that of the faces and the claw feet, and the neat finishes with the busts in patinated wood. There are many similarities with the productions of Jean-Baptiste-Bernard Demay (1759-1848) - carpenter in seats, received master on February 4, 1784; he worked rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, then rue de Cléry until the end of the Empire. Its seats are always neat and elegant; he received official orders from the royal family under the Old Regime and also from the imperial furniture store. Demay was positioned in the "same range" as Jacob and Marcion. Excellent condition, old restorations. French polish redone by our cabinetmaker. Lined on all sides, it can be placed in the center of a room to separate the living room from the dining room. Length: 178cm Depth: 75cm Seat height: 46cm Backrest height: 93cm
