Gigantic 17th Century Executioner's Axe

If execution swords are already rare, execution axes are extremely infrequent on the market.
The size of this one makes it quite exceptional, since the object measures 1m32! 
Great axes of execution were rather used in Great Britain and in the Nordic countries, the Germanic method of execution being rather beheading with a sword.
The engravings on the blade of the axe leave no doubt about its destination.  We find on each side the word “IVSTICIA” (= justice) as well as a coat of arms.
And on one side is the Wheel of Justice, while on the other we find the woods of Justice.
This word IVSTICIA is characteristic of the weapons of execution, while we almost never find mention of the Law. The law,  coming from men was considered imperfect by nature, while Justice could be seen as a manifestation of divine justice.
The coat of arms is oval, it is "argent, edged gules" with a crowned stamp. (Ducal or princely crown). The oval-shaped representation of a shield was classic in the 17th century on monuments and has no connection with the attribution to a maiden.
The blade is 40 cm high, and the cutting edge 23cm
The wood is original, probably ash, it is secured with an iron by a large steel wedge.
At the other end of the handle we find, as on the Germanic battle axes, an iron protection fixed by numerous nails.
This object is quite exceptional, it will hold an impressive place in any collection related to the Haute Epoque.
