"Maxime Dastugue (1851-1909). Couples Of Riders On Avenue Foch."
Maxime DASTUGUE 1851-1909 (Hautes-Pyrénées - Paris) Oil on canvas signed lower right. Dimensions: 61 cm x 51 cm without frame. A magnificent painting of horsemen and horsewomen on Avenue Foch going to the Bois de Boulogne. Carriages, couples of horsemen and women cross paths on the most beautiful Parisian avenue under the Second Empire. Maxime DASTUGUE chose a very sunny day, the dark colors of the frock coats, the jackets with long basques and shiny leather boots contrast with the sky blue frock coats of other riders. Top hats are worn with elegance, the black dresses of the riders partially cover those of the brown colored horses. Here is a whole era when the Parisian upper middle class is skilfully and elegantly represented and transports us to this Paris where life was undoubtedly good. Our painting is painted on its original canvas, it is signed lower right. Maxime Dastugue was a pupil of the great painter Gérôme. He exhibited at the salons from 1876 to 1908 and very quickly won great success and numerous orders. He was admired at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889. Gérard Schurr, Bénézit.
