Ghoum Carpet Made In Silk, Iran, Shah Period Circa 1960
Ghoum rugs designed in natural silk. Ghoum rugs were considered among the most impressive and sought after Persian craftsmanship worldwide. In Qom, all carpets were made with the highest quality raw materials. The silk of Qom was reputed to be one of the finest in the world, while the wool, known as kork wool, was of excellent quality, very shiny and extracted from the neck of the lamb. Carpets were either made entirely of a natural silk pile and warp (sometimes with a double silk pile) or a kork wool pile, sometimes adorned with very intricate silk detailing. The silk threads used were extremely fine, allowing the weavers to weave with great precision in detail and to create intricate designs, while giving the rugs a high knot density.
