Bronze Horse Signed Coustou
French bronze from the second half of the 1800s
made on the model of the "Horses of Marly"
by the French sculptor Guillaume Coustou (Lyon, 11/29/1677 - Paris, 02/22/1746)
The original sculptures, in white Carrara marble,
were commissioned in 1743 by Louis XV to adorn
the Abreuvoir de Marly and installed only two years later
The runaway steed, decked out in all its harness,
he is barely held by the bridle by a young squire
The fusion, rich in details and of excellent workmanship,
shows a nice burnished patina.
Signed lower on the Coustou base
