Complete with illustrations: fold-out map of the port and harbor of Brest and 5 inset plates.

Rare first edition recounting Le Maire's trip to West Africa and the Atlantic islands off the African coast. Le Maire, a doctor with the Compagnie d'Afrique, describes the places visited, their inhabitants, customs and animals.
An important work for the study of West Africa in the 17th century, exchanges between Africans and Europeans and the slave trade.
Good condition - split joint on the upper cover with lack of binding at the junction of the nerves on this cover; hole on the back; dented corners and binding losses on lower corners; reference label glued on the inside cover; small handwritten mark at the top right of the flyleaf; small folds and tears to the map.
