Presumed Portrait Of Countess Sophie Tolstoy In Pencil On Paper By Féodor Tchoumakoff Nineteenth

Portrait of a woman in pencil on paper by the artist Féodor Tchoumakoff (1823-1911). This drawing is said to be one of the portraits made by the artist of Countess Sophia Tolstoy, wife of the writer Leo Tolstoy. She was almost 20 years younger than Féodor Tchoumakoff and they both frequented the same circles of the Russian aristocracy. The drawing is signed lower left by the artist. The paper has some foxing.

Féodor Tchoumakoff was trained at the Academy of Theater Arts and at the Academy of Saint-Petersburg. The works he produced during his studies earned him great recognition from the painter Karl Brüllov (1799-1852). After graduating, he had the opportunity to take a study trip to Italy. From 1857, Féodor Tchoumakoff lived and worked mainly in Paris. He exhibited in the Parisian salons, while sending his works to the exhibitions of the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Féodor Tchoumakoff was a fairly popular artist in aristocratic circles in France and Russia. Several of his works feature portraits of artistocates of his time and his works were purchased by, among others, the French government and Tsar Alexander II. Féodor Tchoumakoff worked in different techniques and genres: historical, genre scenes, portraits. His works are kept in the Russian National Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and many other Russian and European museums, as well as in private collections.
