A Charles II horn inlaid cedar snuff or tobacco box.

Measures 8.6 x 7 x 2.7cm.
The lid and base are composed of cedar with horn mounts and inlay, the sides of the box are decorated with dark horn piqué-point. The box is engraved to the inlaid horn with the sentiment ‘IT IS A FREND TO WHOM I LEND’ and the initials of the owner and date ‘M S 1676’. An exceptionally rare box, sometimes referred to as ‘Cuckold’ boxes due to their sentimental inscriptions.
The box is in remarkable condition with no restoration or losses, there are just a few worm nibbles to the side of the body of the box.
