It comes from the dispersion in 1922 of the Asian art collection of Charles HAVILAND at the DROUOT auction house.
As you can see from the photos, he was exposed to moisture but the main subject, this lovely geisha is not too impacted.
A small restoration would restore it.
It is a gouache, embellished with golden pigments.
The scene is very strange and mysterious with the representation of rats dressed as samurai and armed with sabres.
There would be a search to know the meaning of this representation.
The young geisha is supported against a bamboo fox, petals of cherry blossoms fall over her.
You can see on the right side a red stamp, perhaps that of the artist, which I do not identify.
Total size with embossed paper backing: 1.95 m x 0.70 m.
Gouache format only: 1.23 m x 0.56 m.
This is an exceptional object, the Charles HAVILAND collection being of very high quality.
