Claude-louis Burgat - A Louis XV Armchairs Stamped C-l Burgat 18th Century Circa 1750-1755

Pair of Louis XV period armchairs à la reine stamped by Claude-Louis Burgat, in moulded, sculpted and lacquered beech wood, With a quadrangular structure, its escutcheon backrest with a sloping plan is named after the queen; just as high as it is wide, nicely fiddled, it is covered with a most harmonious vegetal ribbon, topped with a tapering diamond-shaped bouquet of flowers and natural leafy florets. The armrests with cuffs are divergent with nicely flared hands. The assembly is jointed together in the lower part of the backrest and in the side crosspiece of the belt set back from the front base, thereby forming the famous gallant recess. The seat is ample and generous, with a voluble scalloped curviform belt. The whole resting on a base with four arched legs whose shoulder is carved with a daisy in foliage and punctuated with an acanthus leaf. Beautiful harmony of fine and generous sculptures well marked with a delightful perfectly mastered decor. This pair of seats testifies to the quintessence both structural and decorative that Burgat had achieved; the elegance of its lines, as well as the balance of shapes and sculpted motifs which are so characteristic of it, allow us to date its seats to the years 1750/1755. Each of the armchairs stamped inside the back crosspiece in CLBURGAT belt. Dimensions: Height 91.5cm, seat 42cm – Width at hands 66cm, backrest 53.5cm – Seat depth 51cm. Provenance former collection of the Château des Bordes in Touraine by succession. Claude Louis Burgat (1717-1782) a Parisian carpenter who received his master's degree in 1744 devoted himself to the manufacture of seat wood. Established first rue de Cléry then rue Feydeau, it disappeared around 1782, leaving a widow who fell into poverty and obtained help from Louis XVI in 1791. Burgat distinguished himself by his Louis XV production; the elegance of its lines, as well as the balance of shapes and carved patterns are characteristic of it. Today furniture stamped with Burgat remains rare, making our pair of armchairs a particularly exceptional set. Burgat is represented in the State collections, among other things, by two dissimilar armchairs, both finely treated and decorated with flowers and foliage. The first still recalls the taste of the Regency, while the second, of a more capricious style, is linked to the full development of the Louis XV style. Seats by his hand are part of the royal furniture of Sweden at the Stockholm Palace. His stamp can be found on the chaise-longue that articulates as a daybed now in the Musée Carnavalet (Inv.
