Rare Pewter Gourd (tin) - Nuremberg, Early XVII Th Century

Exceptional pewter GOURD (Schraubflasche) in the shape of a book with spandrels, closing with a screwed cap with a molded ring and fitted with leafy clasps decorated with red glass cabochons.
It is engraved on one cover with the risen Christ, and on the other with a “glorious Cross” depicting a tau girded with a serpent and the words “NETTETRA GRAMATON ANNA SAPDA”.

NUREMBERG, Beginning of the 17th century

Object of the greatest rarity of which this is the second observation in nearly half a century, in very good condition with a dark natural patina. The language of the engraved mention is probably Tamil which testifies here to the existence of a large Indian community in Bavaria from the beginning of the 16th century.
