French school around 1900: "The game of balls in St Tropez"; attributed to Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942); Oil on canvas with a trace of signature lower left; Dimensions: 50 x 77cm. This extremely rare subject when it comes to Saint Tropez, perfectly describes life in Provence. Different details allow us to better understand the scene: The panel: "At the source of the wine of St Tropez" as well as the player holding in his hands the newspaper of the time: L'eclaireur. The clothing of the participants and the dozen tricolor flags send us back to a day of celebration (national?) or to a championship final... It's a game of "Long", petanque was only invented in 1907 The expressiveness of each of the extras is the work of an excellent draftsman, which brings us back to Cappiello. Moreover, the latter said he was influenced by the Macchiaioli to which the writing of the painting refers. Finally, the traces of signature indicate "ELLO". There is no frame...
