Portrait of Katherine Stanhope, Countess of Chesterfield (1609-1667), 17th Century entourage of PETER LELY 1618-1680 Huge 17th century old master portrait depicting the portrait of Katherine Stanhope, Countess of Chesterfield (1609-1667), oil on canvas . Three-quarter length portrait of Thomas Wootton's daughter, Baron Wotton seated in a cave wearing an elaborate gold satin dress and holding a palm leaf. Inscribed on the back. Stanhope was widely known at the time as one of the mistresses of the portrait painter Van Dyck, a friend and rival of fellow Dutch painter Lely. Presented in a gilded and wooden frame. Good condition for its age however in some sections the canvas protrudes from the frame. Provenance: Langdale Chase Hotel Dimensions: 55" x 45.5" framed approximately
