Listed as religious painter and painter of history, Jean-Louis Bézard was a pupil of Picot and Guérin. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1829 with his painting Jacob refusing to deliver Benjamin. After his stay in Rome, Louis Philippe commissioned a series of paintings from him to decorate the French History Museum in Versailles. He also decorated many buildings such as the dome of the Saint Augustin Church in Paris or the Saint-Caprais cathedral in Agen.
