"Cree Indian Men's Jacket, Saskatchewan And Manitoba, Canada Circa 1890"
MEN'S JACKETCree Indians, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada
Circa 1890
Caribou skin, beads, button and fabric
H. 96 cm; W 140 cm
Jacket made of natural skin fringed along its entire length, the armholes are decorated with embroidered beads forming flowers, a motif echoing the rectangular band on the collar. The latter is bordered by colored fabric with floral motifs, the lower part is fringed.
Two long beaded bands of rectangular section are applied to the shoulders of the jacket. They resume the tipi motifs on a blue background. A red cross with four branches is embroidered alternately. These bands are worked according to the technique of lazi stich.
The presence of a button on the collar refers to the period of trade with the Europeans. Indeed, at the beginning of the 19th century, the button became an object of adornment for the Assiniboine men who decorated the locks of hair.
