Émile Berchmans, 1867-1947, Belgian painter, poster designer, illustrator and decorator. Coming from a large family of Belgian artists, he is the son of the painter Émile-Édouard Berchmans, brother of the sculptor Oscar Berchmans, nephew of the painter and teacher Henri Berchmans, and cousin of the sculptor Jules Berchmans. He went to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège in 1882, where he was a pupil of Adrien de Witte and at the same time he sketched projects for ceilings and decorative panels for his father. He was appointed professor there in 1904 and became Director from 1930 to 1934. He then moved to Brussels where he died in 1947. Creator of many famous posters, he created the Decoration of the Ceiling of the Royal Theater of Liège (1902-1903 ).
