Louis XIV, still a young sovereign, could not remain indifferent to Alexander who became the master of Asia and Africa. Through his life, Charles le Brun by his cartoons on the life of Alexander celebrated the greatness and the spirit of conquest of his King.
Tapestry panel depicting Alexander the Great at the battle of Gaugamela against Darius III in 331 B.C., it was in this great battle that the kingdom of Macedonia definitively defeated the Achaemenid Empire. Darius intended to form an army equal to the forces involved in order to win a decisive battle. Alexander, instead of marching on BABYLON according to his initial plan, goes up towards the north and crosses the Tigris river (Mesopotamia) to face after several days of march, the Persian army, much superior in number, which awaits him in the plain of Gaugamèles, but whose fate will not be favorable to them.
Tapestry in good condition with old restorations, one of them with a piece added on the top right. The tapestry is sound with consolidations, but the beautiful faces have not been restored.
