Large Art Deco Chalice, Sterling Silver, Belgium 1942
Very beautiful mass chalice from the Art Deco period in solid silver, entirely executed in hammered silver. Its foot is entirely decorated with scenes from the Gospel embossed and finely chiseled in silver. We recognize the Annunciation, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, etc.
The engraving on the foot tells us that the chalice was offered to the young priest Juul Evenepoel (1917-1975) in 1942 by his parents and his twelve brothers and sisters. Through a little more research, I learned that this priest was the third inhabitant of his hamlet of Bleregem next to the abbey of Affligem to be ordained a priest that year and that this gave rise to great celebrations and a procession through the whole village of Hekelgem in 1942. Two of his brothers were also priests and missionaries.Juul then became principal of a college in Kontich and died in a car accident in 1975. I attach the image pious published on the occasion of his funeral. Thé calice weight 570 grams.
