Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich also Christian Guillaume Ernest Dietricy * 30 October 1712 in Weimar; † April 23, 1774 in Dresden Pendants Commedia dell'arte The serenade Pierrot making music in the company of Sylvia (?) and Ottavio (?) Oil on wood 32 x 40 cm or 56 x 61 cm Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich was born in Weimar , son of the court painter Johann Georg Dietrich. His mother was Johanna Dorothea Dietrich, the daughter of the court painter Johann Ernst Rentsch from Weimar. His sister Maria Dorothea Wagner later devoted himself to landscape painting, as did his nephew Johann Georg Wagner. Dietrich's younger sister, Rahel Rosina Böhme, also became a painter. Dietrich received his first education in Weimar with his father Johann Georg Dietrich. After moving to Dresden in 1724, Dietrich was encouraged by the landscape painter Johann Alexander Thiele. August der Starke was quick to notice the young talent and left Count Brühl to oversee the further training of Dietrich, who became his patron. After a long journey which had perhaps also taken him to the Netherlands from 1734, Dietrich was appointed court painter by Augustus III in 1741. A study trip to Italy in 1743, following which Dietrich was renamed Dietricy, however had only a limited effect on Dietrich's work and cannot be verified by sources. The following years were among Dietrich's richest and most fruitful. His works were sold throughout Europe. He was an honorary member of the academies of Augsburg, Bologna and Copenhagen and was appointed director of the school of painting at the Meissen porcelain factory in 1764. A year later he obtained a professorship at the Academy of the Arts in Dresden, which he held until his death. After his death, Dietrich's widow induced the painter Adrian Zingg to publish a complete edition comprising 87 sheets, part of which was completed by Zingg. Inv. no. 1,906 4,500 €
