"The Courtyard Of The Doge's Palace. Hippolyte Plantet 1829-1882"
Hippolyte PlANTET is a French painter born in Lons-Le-Saunier in 1829 and died in Paris in 1882. He trained with great famous painters, Gleyre and Félix Ziem. From his many trips to Egypt and the Middle East, he bequeathed to us magnificent landscapes and portraits that can be found in the museums of France. The Musée d'Orsay preserves a large landscape. Our painting is located in Venice in the courtyard of the Doge's Palace. The inner courtyard of the Doge's Palace with its central well, provides access to the famous Giant's Staircase where the statues of Mars and Neptune are enthroned. The bronze wells are beautifully carved, one of them is by Alfonso Alberghetti. The water carriers grouped around them take advantage of a moment of rest to refresh themselves. Hyppolite Plantet offers us a sumptuous representation of the architecture of the Palace, the whiteness of the stone under a summer sun contrasts with the dark but colorful clothes of the water carriers. The painting is painted on its original canvas signed lower left. Its gilded wooden frame is exceptional. Our painting was exhibited at the 1870 Salon under number 2295.
